  Welcome to the 2004 Java Technology Game Development Contest Discussion Forum. I'm Athomas Goldberg, the Group Leader for Game Technologies at Sun Microsystems and the moderator for this forum.

  To date we've had approximately 220 registered contestants from around the world, from individual students and hobbyists to independent game companies preparing to release their first commercial titles. We've got mobile games, web games and standalone PC games in a variety of genres from puzzle and arcade games to action/adventure games, strategy games, role-playing games and massively multiplayer persistent worlds.

  In this forum we hope to address any burning questions you have about the contest: the rules, the prizes, the judging criteria, etc, In addition, we'll try to spark some lively conversations about your hopes and expectations for the future of Java as a platform for game development.

  So if you have any questions or comments, or any contest-related issues you'd like to discuss, we invite you to post to the forum and get the ball rolling

  It is nice that Sun wants to push Java for game development but can we expect more from Sun than game contests?
  Maybe tools to make game development easier on the Java platform?

  The primary mission of the Game Technologies Group is to develop tools and technologies to reduce the cost and complexity of creating computer games for PC, console and mobile devices. As part of that effort we are continuing to explore ways to simplify the development of high-quality games using Java technologies. One of the first initiatives of the GTG was the release of three open source APIs for game development:
  
  JOGL - Java Bindings for OpenGL - 3D Graphics
  JOAL - Java Bindings for OpenAL - 3D Audio
  JInput - Game Controller Discovery and Polled Input
  
  In addition, we continue to support the development of tools and middleware with the games community on Java.net
  
  We invite you to download and try these technologies and submit feedback on the forums. We also encourage anyone interested in game development in Java to contribute to these efforts by joining the games community and participating in the various game technology projects currently active in the community.
