I just started reviewing the JDIC project (just found out about it thanks to java.net editor), and it looks like many of the requests of better desktop integration are answered in JDIC, still the installation/deployment/update problem exists and JWS is a great idea in paper, a think that a better solution right now is to use JDIC and IzPack for deployment and an auto-update feature to keep it updated. I was already familiar with IzPack :-)
I have seen many examples of this kind of solution (JDIC+IzPack) and I was pleasantly surprised. Apart they don't work very well, but these two with an auto-updater might be do the trick with flying colors.
