There are plenty of inhouse applications at may companies which use Java Web Start to launch. It is becoming the preferred way of starting any Java app. If you are looking for commercial applications then I would take a look through some of the
Swing Sightings lists.
Doing an upgrade to a full version would probably entail either having the full application already there and needing to be unlocked with a key or by sending the user to a different (secure) URL to get the full app.
