Of course there are people that know how Lucene works! :) Lucene in an inverted index. The file format is documented on the Lucene website. As for the model being pluggable - I'm not sure exactly what you mean here, but it is unlikely since Lucene is all about its own file format and retrieval mechanisms. Perhaps Lucene could be the basis for the type of thing you are asking about though. I recommend you sign on to the lucene-user e-mail list to inquire further.
