Problem is that if the language spec (and thus the TCK) are opensourced (which is the next step, the hawks will not call it opensource under any other condition, pragmatic people consider it open enough as it is now), anyone can just change the TCK to match their own changed language implementation and still call it Java.
Sun will be powerless to prevent that, having lost control over the language itself.
If you just want to create an open source implementation of the standard, you can do that today. The only reason to scream for Sun to release their implementation and as a consequence the language definition under a forkable license is precisely that, to fork in order to corrupt the language specification. |
