Why fix something that isn't broken? Majorly refactoring the most popular Java IDE just because one company wants more control is ridiculous. Doing so will only slow down Eclipse's momentum.

SWT UI performance and the Eclipse application framework is here and now. Moreover SWT is open, Swing is not. Also while all the performance gains that Swing will get in 1.5 are great - it's also good to note that 1.5 is not here yet - right now they're just promises.
