I totally agree. I think a great way to go would be doing an integration to a native backend available on the system, much like Phonon(http://phonon.kde.org/) - we could perhaps even use Phonon. Java should not have its own set of codecs. It should have the native system's codecs - allowing fx. all gstreamer decoders to be used on Linux.
