A key difference from my perspective is that a lot of the lightweight containers etc. have been able to start with a clean sheet of paper. This allows them to avoid legacy design constraints and make use of more recent technology.
In addition, many of these people only ever had the intention of trying to make things better. They don't have an agenda defined by the fact that they have an existing product which they'd like to see people continue to use.
