I come from a long line of tinkers and farriers (eluded to here).
The difference between tinkers and farriers and smiths is that we are itinerant and own our tools, and we favour to work on the lighter, wieldy, human scale. Beauty and expression also come into it- I remember being fascinated by my great-grandfather's horse brasses as a kid.
OSS means the modern toolsmith gets to build and own the tools again- I'd rather use Ant and Armed Bear J than most commercial offerings- they're light enough to use and I can change them to fit me.
