It is not about now and then.

It is about the difference between programming embedded devices and developing business applications. Both things happen today and have different requirements.

One of the projects that I did at the university was to implement a Forth kernel (like the apollo project I believe) for an embedded device based on the Motorola 68000 processor. There is nothing fancy about it. It simply doesn't take more than a few kilobytes, and you cannot compare it to desktop operating systems like windows and linux.
