No programming will never die, but overall the author is right. There is a "gold rush" or "golden era" in any abstractable industry . Because of the Internet and modern technology, the cycles of creation and destruction is happening faster and faster.
Your comment about the JVM is true. However, how many programmers does it take to maintain the JVM (a handful) vs. the millions of programmers it services?
Programming will always be here, but it will be a highly specialized field, unlike what it was during the 20 years that led up to the dot-bust.
Note, I am a programmer that looks sadly upon this development, not a business owner who is celebrating a new found cost savings.
