  Why wouldn't Java continue to be #1? Do those other languages offer significant advantages? The things that slow down my Java development are not the language, but the corporate culture, user acceptance testing, meetings, etc. None of those languages will make me better.

  ....If java still appears to be the completely dominant languate of choice / requirement, does that mean you'll stop talking about some of the more riduculous languages out there that are java derivatives? Jython? Are you kidding me? Maybe you should have added QuickBASIC to the language list...

  This poll is really badly formulated. Of course Java will still be the most used JVM language by the end of 2008. Do you think everyone will rewrite all of their existing Java apps in another language?

  I'd not be surprised if the person creating the poll does want to indicate just that, that Java is all but dead, hanging in there by its bloody fingernails, while other languages keep the platform alive.

  I've been seeing ever more such sentiment on java.net lately, and Sun's constant screaming about "new languages on the JVM", "change the name of the JVM to remove the J", and investment in things like JRuby doesn't bode well for their opinions re the language either (but their decisions where it comes to language changes over the last few years show that as well of course).
