The typical advice for addressing performance is to get it right then make it faster. Cliff Sharples recommends the opposite. He suggests that you "test performance at least nightly" in his DevX article Continuous Performance: A Best Practice to Ensure Faster Code. If performance requirements are important, they should be in the requirements definition and the progress of the project can be measured against these requirements.
