JavaDesktop
Shaping the JavaDesktop community: The java.net JavaDesktop community is preparing to beef up their site. Kathy Walrath, site editor, writes "we'd like to have a steady stream of articles and smaller items such as (for example) pointers to other interesting web sites, programming tips, and the like." Walrath explains that she's been a little busy these past couple of months working on the Swing Tutorial but now she is ready and welcomes your suggestions for the JavaDesktop community here on java.net.»Read more
Jini
The Rio Project: Fundamental to the design of Jini is the acknowledgement that the network is not reliable and that changes occur on the network. Rio is a Jini Community project that addresses the concerns of provisioning in that setting. It provides a "dynamic adaptive network architecture built using Jini technology mechanisms. Managing large projects
In a large complex project, you want to be able to keep track of the current - or at least recent - state of the many pieces. In his ONJava article Managing Complexity: Keeping a Large Java Project on Track, Tom Copeland looks at combining a variety of open source tools to produce an hourly update. His Dashboard was created before Maven was mature and is built primarily using Ruby and Ant to produce the information he needs.

Full Screen Exclusive Mode Tutorial
With the J2SE 1.4 release came the ability "suspend the windowing system so that drawing can be done directly to the screen." In the Full-Screen Exclusive Mode API tutorial, Michael Martak covers choosing and setting the Display Mode for improved performance, deciding between passive and active rendering, using page flipping in this mode. You'll also find examples that show off the API on machines that support the mode.
